PRP – PLATELET RICH PLASMA
INTRODUCTION
PRP is a regenerative process by stimulating the power of your own growth factors within the body. Blood is taken for the purpose of concentrating your own platelets, so they can be re-injected and harnessed for skin rejuvenation, scar remodelling, stretch marks and hair growth.
This process encourages the skin into a regenerative phase by stimulating a cascade of biological effects promoting tissue repair and restoration. This is very advantageous as we see improved blood flow to an area, increased collagen and elastin production ultimately providing more structural support for the skin as we age. It is an ideal treatment to improve overall skin texture and tone decreasing the appearance of fine lines also helping remodel tissue in acne scarring and stretch marks.
PRP is a popular form of treatment for hair loss; the growth factors released from the activated platelets are thought to awaken dormant hair follicles, improve the blood supply around follicular units and prolong the active growth phase of the hair. PRP injections can be done alone or in combination with other therapies such as topical minoxidil or oral finasteride.
FAQ
.
HOW DOES PRP WORK?
Platelets are a nutrient-component in the blood responsible for repairing tissue. When applied directly to soft tissues, these platelets release reparative, rejuvenating growth proteins in the area
To create PRP, a small sample of your own blood is processed in a centrifuge to separate out the red, white blood cells as only the platelets that reside in the plasma is used. By spinning down the blood this concentrates the platelets resulting in platelet rich plasma and higher concentrations of growth factors. PRP can then be injected back into the skin or scalp using tiny needles, microneedling or both techniques.
HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY TIME?
The downtime required after this treatment is usually minimal. Some redness, swelling and tenderness may occur, occasionally bruising immediately following the treatment but this quickly settles within a few days.
DOES IT HURT?
For patient comfort prior to giving any injections a topical anaesthetic is usually applied to the skin.
IS THE TREATMENT SAFE?
Risks are low as the patient’s own blood is being utilised and there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction.
The key benefit – it is a natural treatment.
HOW LONG WILL THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
The treatment can take up to 45-90 minutes depending on the size of an area being treated.
WILL I SEE RESULTS QUICKLY?
Results can vary for each client and results are progressive over time. This means results are not immediate as it takes time to stimulate the rejuvenation process.
WHO CAN HAVE THE TREATMENT?
Clients over the age of 18 years old. Taking certain medications i.e. oral steroids, anticoagulation treatments (warfarin, heparin), medical conditions such as blood disorders, acute or chronic infections, undertaking any long-term therapies (especially chemotherapy …etc), pregnant and breastfeeding women are not advised to undertake these treatments.
HOW LONG WILL RESULTS LAST?
We recommend a course of treatments for PRP as there is an accumulative effect in collagen production and contraction. Usually 3 treatments are recommended with a 4 week gap in between each treatment, optimisation is around 2 – 3 months when the skin will be smoother, firmer and revitalised. It is recommended that you have a single maintenance session every 3-6 months.
Each skin or hair condition needs assessing and recommendations will be made accordingly .
