Christmas is now well and truly behind us, but the weather seems to be dropping in temperature. These low temperatures can cause eczema flare ups for both regularly sufferers and for those who have never suffered before.
Eczema is a skin condition that causes red, inflamed skin, which becomes very dry. .The term for eczema is known as atopic dermatitis. This simply means that your skin is presenting a reaction to an external and internal factor.
Eczema flares up because the skin does not have the internal capacity to deal with the internal or external factors it may be faced with. Putting extra stress on the body and therefore presenting itself as inflammation. Inflammation is a sign that the body is protecting itself.
Due to a combination of changing temperatures and dry air, winter can be a cause for dry, damaged and irritated skin. Often, people find that their eczema or dermatitis gets particularly bad on parts of the skin that they expose to the elements in winter, for example, their hands and face.
We can’t change the weather, but we can take steps to help our skin win the winter battle against eczema flares. Here’s what we recommend:

Internal Supplementation
Inflammation on the skin occurs because internally the body is under stress or can not sufficiently repair the skin disease for some reason. Therefore, the correct internal supplementation is key. We recommend looking at the following;
- Vitamin D supplements
- Vitamin A supplements
- Omega 3 and 6 – essential fatty acids can be found in such supplements as Hemp Oil
- Probiotic
We always recommend seeing your local GP as eczema can be a reaction to a food intolerance, abnormal immune function or an allergic reaction.
