Refined sugars have recently received negative press about the effects it can have on our health and waistlines, but what about the effects it can have on our skin? By refined sugars, we are referring to simple carbohydrate foods that are high-glycemic or high in saturated fats like: white bread, candy, fried food, ice cream, fruit juice, pasta, ketchup, cream cheese, jam, pizza, sugar (white and brown), packaged snacks and sodas. So, why should we avoid or significantly reduce the intake of such foods:
- Wrinkles – Sugar basically attacks the healthy, supple collagen in your skin that keeps your skin wrinkle free. When your collagen and elastin levels are depleted, wrinkles and sagging skin occur.
- Inflammation – Sugar causes a rise in blood sugar levels that surge and plummet, which leads to inflammation. Any sign of inflammation can exacerbate skin conditions like acne and rosacea.
- Dehydrated Skin – Sugar absorbs water from our cells which can lead to dryness, puffiness and dark circle under the eyes.
So, what foods should we eat to help maintain healthy skin?
Opt for complex carbohydrates, like brown rice and vegetables; low-glycemic options, like beans, nuts and whole grains; healthy fats, like olive oil and avocados; lean protein, like salmon; fiber, like broccoli and cauliflower; and antioxidants, like berries.
